Constance Wu for the NY Times

The NYT print headline is prob more accurate to the content than the online version’s headline. Oh & it’s not really a memoir, but a book of several standalone essays. Thank u @Thessaly for writing w/ honesty, integrity & compassion https://t.co/2HyQWxYbse pic.twitter.com/BxGHp4XnLp

I’m sure mrtoad and many more will downvote me but I just…don’t buy a lot of this. She got high on her own supply after CRA, made a horrendous misstep by publicly bitching about the continuation of a show that paid her millions, and then concocted a story to get back into the public’s good books. Doesn’t ring true.

i felt crazy reading the other posts. did people forget her main co-stars were children and that's why it was particularly bad?

i am willing to think she's experienced victimization. i do not think that makes her other rumored behavior something excuseable.

Yeah, the harassment part isn’t what I’m questioning.

so are you questioning that being sexually harassed by someone involved in your job could influence the way you behave at that job or in public-facing ways regarding to that job?

so because your show stars children you can't hate your job? i don't particularly understand this mindset tbh

its a nonsensical fucking argument but you clearly have an axe to grind so please, use a post about a woman's rape and assault as a way to get all that anger out

I’m not sure what there isn’t to buy? She mentioned that she thought the show would be cancelled and then find out it was renewed. She’s giving us insight into her tweet, and honestly if I finally got away from a set I was harassed on and then found out I had to be report back to where I was sexually harassed for hours on the day I can’t imagine how I’d react. Like people aren’t black and white, at no point did she say she wouldn’t report to set or demand to be let out of her contract. Celebs have done worse to sabotage roles they don’t want to be on. I’d hope people would think more nuanced at how a victim reacts to returning to a triggering space. Accusing her of straight up lying about the abuse is something else

the harassment wasn’t the reason she didn’t want to return though. it was the fact she had other (better) projects lined up that she had to drop out of after the show was renewed. the article up there says the harassment ended when she became more powerful and famous during s2 in 2015 and they no longer spoke to each other. her tweet storm happened in 2019

The harassment is still connected with the role/job. Just because it stopped doesn’t mean it won’t impact her and her feelings towards the show. Multiple things could be true, she could not want the work anymore because she has better roles AND because the space is tainted for her knowing that her harrasser is still connected with and part of FOTB. The harassment may have ended but she also stated herself that people on set know about it and were still buddy buddy with her harrasser. That’s not a positive or healthy work environment to be in

What do you not buy? That she was sexually harassed on set?

"She got high on her own supply after CRA, made a horrendous misstep by publicly bitching about the continuation of a show that paid her millions,"

Even if it's true, is she not allowed the space to learn and grow from it? She's taking full ownership here and not making excuses about being misunderstood; she's not blaming everyone for misinterpreting her tweet, nor is she dismissing it on the account of "being human". She took her time reflecting and did the work, and personally apologized to everyone onset. Like... what more do you want from her?

IDK, I just don't think women, especially those with public-facing careers, come forward with false allegations of harassment for sympathy. I think she was probably being harassed and that also she wanted to take on higher profile roles, which made Fresh Off the Boat's renewal particularly disappointing. Bad things do happen to people who are kind of crappy.

While she never named the producer who harassed her, she didn't make it too hard to figure out who he is either. Which would be absolutely batshit crazy to do if you are lying. Don't really know why one would doubt her story but then again I didn't really understand why everyone was so disproportionally upset at her for tweeting that in the first place. Glad I never put my two cents into the discussion knowing what we know now.

How is it hard to believe someone would want to kill themselves while being publicly ridiculed and called an embarrassment to your community...
