September 24, 2022 - Or maybe that’s just me. Albert Pujols just became the 4th player to hit at least 700 HRs, behind Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755), and Barry Bonds (762); the first player born outside the US to do it; and the only player besides Aaron to have 700 homers and 3000+ hits.
- 42-year-old Pujols was drafted by the Cardinals in 1999, debuted in 2001, and has sworn that he’s retiring this year, so he’s probably not going to surpass the players above him on the list. It’s also unlikely any active player will hit 700.
- He spent last season in LA - which is one of the reasons the crowd is so happy about him hitting his second dinger of the night off of them - and the previous 9 seasons in LA of Anaheim. Coming home to the Cardinals and hitting this milestone in LA feels like a movie script even without the Field of Dreams music piped into the stadium.
- In other baseball news, the Yankees’ Aaron Judge has hit 60 home runs this season, tying him with Ruth for 2nd in the AL, and one homer short of Roger Maris’s AL and non-steroid MLB record of 61. People were freaking out because Apple had the broadcast rights to tonight’s Yankees game, too, and streaming is hard for old people baseball fans.
