Michelle Williams, playing the mother of the main character in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, is reportedly set to campaign as a lead rather than as a supporting actress, a move unexpected by basically everyone who predicts and follows awards season.
Though it is only September, predictions for these things start early, and many thought Williams could have potentially cruised to a Supporting Actress win for her role as Mitzi Fabelman, with no one else even considered a lock for that race as of now. Lead Actress, however, is a different story, with Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett at the top of an already crowded field.
Many who have already seen the film insist that Michelle's role is indeed a supporting role, not a lead, which could presumably hurt her chances. But Williams has already been nominated for four Oscars, and has won a slew of television awards for her role in Fosse/Verdon, so it's not impossible that this move pays off for her. Guess we'll find out in a few months!
