The film, directed by David O. Russell curiously did not make a splashy festival premiere despite Russell's awards bait track record and having 15 names above the title.

The lack of a promotional push may be in part to avoid having stories about Russell's history of abuse taking hold. Film tracking site The Quorem has Amsterdam coming in low compared to movies with similar budgets with October release dates. Low promo = low awareness.

"Awareness is critical for the success of this film. If the studio can bump awareness while handling the potential downside issue it may be trying to manage, the corresponding interest numbers could help drive a respectable opening. "

The social media embargo has been lifted. See early reactions to Amsterdam after the jump.

#Amsterdam is an enchanting mystery with a beautiful friendship at its center. The film explores an unsettling piece of U.S. history that's repeating itself right now, but it left me feeling optimistic that goodness will prevail.

Unfortunately, David O. Russell's Amsterdam is a big ol' miss. Tone and editing are his most jarring since Huckabees. When it has something to say in the third act it's way too late. Robbie and Bale are the best perfs.

As for Taylor Swift, at least she'll get a meme out of it. pic.twitter.com/dBlwsiJHMW

AMSTERDAM is a convoluted mess that’s never as interesting as it thinks it is. Christian Bale attempts to do quirky comedy with embarrassing results while Margot Robbie & John David Washington lack any chemistry. Lubezski’s camerawork feels at odds with David O. Russell’s style. pic.twitter.com/hJkv94RlcI
