He'll get "blasted" by the same people who always have a meltdown when people (rightly) point out that superhero films aren't particularly challenging for performers or an audience.

I think that's a real truth about Hollywood.

I always remember Christopher Lee saying "Every actor has to make terrible films from time to time, but the trick is never to be terrible in them."

The way you approach a movie where characters ride sharks like they're horses and Julie Andrews voices a shrimp the size of a submarine is going to be way different from how you approach a historical drama. You take on a movie like Aquaman because it'll be interesting to play a villain, to wear a funny costume, to raise your profile, to have an action figure, it pays well, whatever.

Damn, Lee was such a legend. Which reminds me, where is that Gormenghast adaptation Gaiman was working on?

I think it often takes greater focus or work ethic on behalf of the actor to make their performance shine in something lightweight than in a brilliant, technical piece which really pushes their skills. Because it’s so easy to slack off in a big budget film when really, that’s where actors do most of their advertising for the passion projects they actually want to do.
