I have hEDS, moderate ADHD, and severe depression. I'm already struggling to decide if I want to have children and possibly pass that stuff down. I know he has lupus, like wtf are you doing having 10 kids knowing full well they could go through the shit you're going through?

Just add BPD and migraines and we are actual twins. I'm not having kids. No way. My sister is 100% healthy and it isn't guaranteed if I have 1 child that it would...but it's still recessive? I think?

I read a conspiracy theory (because why not have Nick Cannon conspiracy theories out in the world???) that he's having so many kids in case he needs an organ transplant someday, as a result of the lupus, and wants to guarantee a match. Extremely farfetched (and a little malicious?) but I wouldn't be surprised if the underlying idea - that he's just assuming all these kids will turn out in perfect health - is true. We haven't seen a single sign from him that he's thinking beyond himself.

if even remotely true that's despicable. the kids aren't just bags of available vital organs what the fuck

In that Netflix doc 'Our Father', the most insidious part IMO was the fact that fertility doctor who was *raping* his patients (insemination by deception is 1000% rape, IDGAF) was riddled with autoimmune diseases and still did what he did.

That fucker fathered over 90 *known* children off of his patients without their consent and EVERY SINGLE ONE is struggling with chronic diseases. The bastard's DNA is so fucking rotten, his offspring don't even all have the SAME diseases.

I can't help but see the parallels and wonder if there's a name to this kind of depravity. Is there an entry for this in the DSM? For men who KNOW they are ill and feel entitled to spread their defective genes far and wide?

I agree that the fertility doctor is a garbage human being, but as someone with an autoimmune disease and who has family members struggling with autoimmune diseases, it's really hurtful to see someone describe it as "riddled with autoimmune disease" and "fucking rotten" DNA. It's really insensitive and also screams eugenics.

I'm sorry. I didn't intend to make you, or anyone else suffering with chronic illnesses feel bad. I definitely should have thought harder about how I phrased that.

Not really sure how to feel about this comment, as someone who has lupus and also wants kids. It's a weird disease. I got it because there is a genetic factor (on both sides of my family) but it seems like it skips around. No one in my family who has it (mostly much older relatives, and then me lol) has kids who also have it. Several doctors have told me that the chances of me passing it down to my own children is very slim (less than a 5% chance, apparently).

My brother and his girlfriend are very healthy and active individuals, and their child was born with a lifelong health condition that has nothing to do with lupus. It was just this random thing that happened.

I know some people are using reproductive technology to screen for genetic conditions and then implant embryos without those conditions, or with less serious variants. If you're worried about the chances, that could be an option.

But you're so right - even then, kids can be born with totally unrelated conditions, or suffer an injury and end up with life long consequences. There's no guarantees.

Sure, that technology exists (my brother and his girlfriend are going to be doing IVF and screening for genetic conditions when they decide to have another child), but it's not affordable to most people. My husband and I both have decent jobs, own a house, and do fine for ourselves. We could afford a child, but we certainly couldn't afford $4k - $10k for the testing on top of the IVF costs ($12k - $25k a pop, with a less than 50% chance of success).

There are never any guarantees, and tbh...I'm not upset by much that I read on the Internet, but this conversation always gets to me when I see people so thoughtlessly advocating for eugenics. Maybe the above commenters weren't talking about me specifically, but...they are. I have lupus, I want children, I have a less than 5% chance of passing my illness (that I deal with well, and have a happy life in spite of) to a child, but apparently it's disgusting and selfish for me to want to have a kid.
