August 15, 2022 A 1,300-pound walrus named Freya who became popular for sunbathing in the Oslofjord was euthanized by the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries over concerns for her health and the safety of the crowds of people who would ignore the warnings about getting too close to her. The option of moving her was also considered but it was decided that it was not feasible.
That Norwegian authorities had to kill a beloved Walrus because human onlookers simply wouldn’t listen and keep a safe distance from her is like a parable for our tragic, perilous times.
