I've said many times that Aaron Sorkin is my problematic favourite. Those first four seasons of The West Wing have problems but they also really do shine. The Social Network is basically perfect. A Few Good Men is stunning. He's a very talented writer who does his best when there's a strong director pushing back on him.

I also love the sceenplays for Fargo, Some Like It Hot and The Sixth Sense.

I also really love the screenplay for Sense & Sensibility. As a novel, it's good but Emma Thompson's screenplay really shines. She adapts the novel in a way that is more energetic.

Honestly it's one of those situations in which I get flexing your creative muscles but STOP GIVING HIM SHIT TO DIRECT. His screenplays are fantastic, the way he writes is just so engrossing. The Newsroom wasn't perfect by any means but damn did it scratch that itch.

I think a great article to read/write would be comparing and contrasting the adaptations of Austen's novels. I don't think anyone can touch Thompson, she really amplified the text while respecting it. She also had a director that respects the script behind the lens. Autumn de Wilde's Emma. gave a similar experience. IDK what PWB is doing with Persuasion but it's gonna be bad.

adaptations of Austen's novels

That would be a must read. Add a Clueless to the list of adaptations, also extremely quotable!

Yeah, I can’t stand Sorkin as a director, but I instantly thought of The Social Network

To paraphrase a great scholar K. Hummel - he may be difficult, but boy, can he write.

S&S is just perfection. I don’t know if you’ve read Thompson’s diary about the making of it but it’s also a brilliant read.
