  • Based on the New York Times nonfiction best-seller by Lisa Taddeo, 'Three Women' is a first-person account of eight years of reportage, illuminating the lives of three women.
  • Lina, traumatized in her teens and now wading through a passionless marriage in suburban Indiana; Maggie, reeling from the aftermath of alleging her high school teacher in small-town North Dakota had a sexual relationship with her when she was underage (he was acquitted of three of the charges against him, and the judge declared a mistrial on the remaining two); and Sloane, a privileged Northeasterner who sleeps with men (and women) other than her husband-for her husband’s pleasure.
  • The through line, in many ways, was Taddeo, rushing from coast to coast-at one point with a baby-as she invested deeper and deeper in these women’s lives while grappling with the struggles of her own. The Showtime adaptation, which Taddeo executive-produces, seeks to further the book’s achievement. “I want the series to do what the book did for a lot of people: help them feel less alone, and more seen and heard,” Taddeo tells Vanity Fair. “What needed to be preserved was the interiority, women hearing things they are going through, things that may not be spoken elsewhere with the same honesty and rawness.”

  • Betty Gilpin stars as Lina - traumatized in her teens and now wading through a passionless marriage in suburban Indiana.

  • DeWanda Wise stars as Sloane - a privileged Northeasterner who sleeps with men (and women) other than her husband-for her husband’s pleasure.

  • Gabrielle Creevy as Maggie - reeling from the aftermath of alleging her small-town high school teacher had a sexual relationship with her when she was underage.

  • Shailene Woodley as Gia - the fictionalised version of Lisa Taddeo, the author.
  • Beyond these women’s lives, there is the fictionalized version of Taddeo’s own, as inhabited by Woodley. Portraying Gia, the writer who persuades these three women to tell her their stories, the Big Little Lies alum takes a journey similar to that of her three subjects. “Writing Gia felt natural, because of how honest I strive to be about my struggles with desire and sex and health, both mental and physical, and beyond,” Taddeo says. “It also felt natural to give her a vibe that could get to the truth of those experiences, and Shailene Woodley is just such a sentient force of nature that she has made this exactly the character it needed to be.” Taddeo adds, “I, for one, like her a lot better than me.”
