  • The LGBTQ+ advocacy organization GLAAD has slammed comedian Ricky Gervais’ new Netflix special, SuperNature, as "dangerous" and "anti-trans."
  • Mere hours after the special 'Super Nature' was released on Netflix, it began receiving criticism online for several jokes that target the transgender community, particularly trans women.
  • Now, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is speaking out to denounce Gervais' latest Netflix special. In a statement obtained via Variety, the LGBTQ+ advocacy organization calls the special "dangerous" and says it consists of “anti-trans rants masquerading as jokes.” GLAAD also accuses Gervais of "spouting anti-gay rhetoric" and "spreading inaccurate information about HIV." Read the relevant portion of the statement below:
  • "We watched the Ricky Gervais ‘comedy’ special on Netflix so you don’t have to. It’s full of graphic, dangerous, anti-trans rants masquerading as jokes. He also spouts anti-gay rhetoric and spreads inaccurate information about HIV. Attention Ricky and Netflix: people living with HIV today, when on effective treatment, lead long and healthy lives and cannot transmit HIV to others."
  • After denouncing Gervais' new comedy special, GLAAD's statement goes on to criticize Netflix for hosting the content and refusing to enforce their own hate speech policy by allowing "so-called comedians who spew hate in place of humor" on their platform.
  • Although he is not mentioned by name, GLAAD is likely referring to comedian Dave Chappelle, whose recent Netflix special The Closer was met with similar backlash to its anti-trans rhetoric, and led to company-wide walkouts and protests. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos stood by the special, saying he supports Chappelle’s “creative freedom” while encouraging employees to “disagree openly” with Chappelle's sentiment.
