Head of CW warned shows to gear towards series finales
One last thing re: Roswell and Legacies. Mark Pedowitz & his team at The CW had the class & grace to warn the shows that they might not survive, even if The CW wanted them. Because of that, the season finales of both shows were carefully crafted to also work as series finales.

-Julie Plec has revealed that head of The CW, Mark Pedowitz told show runners that their shows may not survive the impending doom that was renewals so to treat their finales as potential series finales.
-Some took his advice (Charmed, Legacies, Roswell) while others hedged their bets (Legends of Tomorrow) and ended on cliffhangers.
