I did, and the things Joan did to her are even worse in the book than the movie. That bit about Joan completely cutting her off from her will after she made peace with each other as an adult was horrible.
i have read the secret history twice now & the first time i liked it but then that was yrs ago & didn't remember anything from it around my second reread & i did not like it at all the second time around. i would give it a try if you rly want to but just know it's very long drawn out & is very pretentious & takes itself way too seriously.
I read The Secret History when it first came out and thought it was overrated, but I honestly don't remember much else about it other than that.
I read Mommie Dearest in middle school and whew, Joan Crawford was a horrible person. To this day, there are still stans who say Christina is lying. I feel bad that a movie about child abuse is a camp classic. Like I get that Faye Dunaway was over the top, but still.
lol in complete contrast to the other comments here, the secret history is one of my favourite ever books! i think it's beautifully written and compelling. maybe it is pretentious but i reread it every year because i love it that much and i think donna tartt is ridiculously talented. i want to read mommie dearest too!
Might check out Mommie Dearest. I’ve never watched the movie…anyone read the book?

I was amazed that Tartt sold the story to me. It is mostly unrelatable (to me) characters doing awful thing. And yet, I kinda got it.
The book was extremely long, but i kinda wish the country house was given more detail.
Finally, it was pretty funny. Definitely will be re-reading it in a few years.
