he's very...i'm not like the other guys. i only heard ..she? is that the name? it's the only one i've ever heard. my teacher choreographed a dance to it. i only learned it was him when i got a copyright notice from insta.

i want to give him the benefit of the doubt as a possible ally? i'm never sure

Very much “I am not like other other guys” vibe. I do think he can be very charming, but I don’t think he’s very bright.

I think he's sincere. It never occurred to me that he wasn't. I don't know where the idea that he's all about image or that he jumps on every bandwagon comes along comes from. Most artists are concerned about their image to some degree, and he couldn't stay stuck in his boyband persona forever.

I've never heard One Direction or followed them. I know them through ONTD posts only

That's my point of reference too. I think the first time I heard a 1D song was last year, when one of my students showed me one of their videos, lol. It was cute. I prefer him as a solo artist, though.

I don't follow him but I think some of that stems from his radical image shift happened seemingly somewhat suddenly? like his first album he wasn't dressing himself in costumes, but then he was suddenly ~breaking gender barriers~ and like maybe that's organic, maybe he's just playing the game like nearly every female artist does, but it was kinda jarring. didn't feel like something he's been interested in for very long. but that could be sincere - people's interests do change! who knows

Oh, was he not from the first? I'm picturing him in a lot of sparkly suits, but those weren't necessarily gendered. I would assume that he was playing it safe following his departure from 1D and trying to ease himself into a solo career. No idea. I just think it's weird when people are like, He's so fake because he never did this when he was 16!

It’s clear you don’t follow him cause he was very much rocking flamboyant suits his entire debut tour. Even in late 1D days, he was starting to dress differently than the others and stand out on the red carpet compared to them.

I don't know much about his 1D looks, aside from his hair, but I figured that the suits were an early look! I don't think it's fair that he always be compared to his younger self. Guy's almost thirty; he's not going to be the same as he was at sixteen or even twenty. If he hadn't changed, people would be complaining about his inability to grow or move on.

I really feel like he just likes having fun with dressing up. I don’t think it’s that serious. I don’t see the problem with a straight dude enjoying wearing fun, feminine clothes, it’s not revolutionary by any means though. He does very little promo generally so I don’t personally get the pandering comments since he doesn’t seem to do much pandering to anyone lol.

Yeah, I feel the same way! I don't think he ever claimed to be an icon or revolutionary, that was the media's take. That, I feel, was an incorrect response on their part, but that's not something he has control over.

This. Not to mention he never asked or even mentioned gender, not to mention gender-bending. He's always said he's having fun and wearing stuff that make him feel good. All the other annoying ~~revolutionary narrative has been tacked on by stans and the media. And to ask him to come out and say "guys, this isn't what I'm doing" is to ask a celebrity to do something no celebrity has ever done, which is to stop his one good press. People expect him to do unreasonable shit and then get mad when he doesn't.

Yes, and I've seen comments like "well he doesnt dress like that in his street clothes or every day life!" but it's like, these are his stage costumes/work uniform. I don't get why he needs to be glam 24/7 to prove something.

at the end of the day, we all have our personal point of view and ppl will think what they want of you. i, personally, don’t find him very genuine lol. i’m not sayin he lies about his views / social issues standpoint or wtv, but he does come off (to me!) as someone with a carefully planned image that’s used to make $$$
