Netflix announced today that Nimona will be coming in 2023. The film will be produced by Annapurna and stars Chloe Moretz, Riz Ahmed, and Eugene Yang.
In the film, Knight Ballister Boldheart (Ahmed) is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Moretz), a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.
Nimona was originally going to be produced by Blue Sky Studios. Disney acquired the studio when they bought Fox.
During meetings with the studios, Disney opposed the LBGT+ elements of the film, especially the inclusion of a same-sex kiss.
When Blue Sky Studios was shut down in 2021, Nimona was shut down with it. The film was allegedly 75% complete. Annapurna and DNEG began production early last year and are finishing what Blue Sky started.
