Loved this book so much, but the whole tumblr scandal really turned me off--for others who have read the book and loved it too, is this show worth the watch?
I started watching before I learned about the creep lead and was put off by some plot decisions. The scene of Sunja’s birth especially felt very heavy handed, like THIS IS YOUR FATE, which kind of goes against the pachinko metaphor of life and chance in the book. I did love the opening credit sequence, though.
I loooove the book too and am a little disappointed with plot changes they've made, as well as the structuring of the show. For example, some of the cutting back and forth between the 1980s and early 1900s is too jarring and quick - doesn't let the individual scenes breathe and feels like the show is forcing parallels on us instead of us letting draw the conclusions ourselves as viewers.
As others mentioned, the cinematography and production of the show are so beautiful though.
They've also made frustrating little changes to Sunja's character that make her seem like more of an agent. My friend put it as them making her into a "striver" instead of a "survivor," which I thought was an eloquent way to frame it. It feels Hollywood in this sense - they're pigeonholing Sunja into a certain type of resilience or strength instead of providing space for the fullness of her character.

Nevertheless, the filmography is beautiful and I still say watch the show.
