I think I was put off because she was delighted at being praised for "masculine" writing in the introduction, that it was all I could think of when reading all the rape and misogyny. The entire book was so uneven that it felt like the barest hint of plot only existed to connect various scenes of dehumanizing women. It made me sick that the chapter after a rape victim was wishing she was dead after being mutilated the main male character ends the book by telling Sara that he doesn't care what she wants, he's going to do what he wants. The sheer misogyny of all his scenes were so gross and he was supposed to be the male hero? I think they get married again in the series, the introduction said something about that? I was disgusted that that was supposed to be a step to their reconciliation and not representative of how men are psychopaths with no empathy.
Plus there was a weird lesbophobic detail that was so stupid that I can't believe it made it to print, even in 2000.
