Now I'm wondering how someone gets that job.

Production assistant or assistant director who interns unofficially under a few big deals who pioneered the concept. Just spitballing.

I think there are certification programs, sort of like how fight coordinators are certified? But since intimacy coordinator is a newer job, I'm not sure how much of a requirement it is.

Programs can take 3 to 15 months and cost around 15,000 to complete. The theater has had them for decades. This article really shows the history.

looked it up, there's an intimacy coordinator school in canada that runs a certification courses. these are their pre-reqs

Completed Level 1 & 2 IDC professional workshop program, or equivalent experience
Minimum of 300 hours, 10 years, or 15 show credits working in a Directorial, Choreography, or Coordinator position on film & television sets
Background with movement instruction
Sexual education advocacy courses and background
Mental health first aid (and subsequent MHFA working with minors) training and background
ACTRA members preferred

so it does look like they're not giving out the title to any random on set.

I was hoping mental health training was at least expected, just some rando working with something this delicate defeats the whole purpose

A lot of fight/stunt choreographers have moved into this position, and it makes sense.
