"The judge also ordered Smollett to pay $120,000 to the Chicago police"

Oh, fuck off.

Prison for lying? Seriously? This is some community service level shit.

Does Jussie live in Chicago? If not, why the fuck shouldn’t he have to pay 120k for pretending to get beat and waste Chicago PD’s time and resources to find the “criminals”? I would be so ashamed if I ever faked a hate crime attack and would accept full accountability… and to do it in a city one doesn’t live in, a city one’s tax money doesn’t go to? Fuck him. He needs to pay them for being stupid and wasteful

He was living in Chicago at the time to shoot Empire

Thank you for clarifying. If any of his income was taxed by Chicago I do think he should have to pay less in fines

I saw an article that said the city/police were asking for $130,000 cause that’s what the case cost to investigate. He did give up his 10,000 bond when the charges were dropped so I’m guessing that’s where this amount comes from.

If that’s true it makes sense. Fabulous detective skills

filing a false report always results in punishment, or at least can result in.

He had them going on a full blown manhunt.

I do think there should be a punishment for knowingly filing a false police report, especially if it devolves into a full blown man hunt, years of people working the case, forcing a trial, etc. The same thing is likely going to happen to Sherry Papini or whatever (though I will be curious to see what she gets). But, the issue comes with proving someone knowingly filed a false report. Like, sexual assault victims sometimes walk back their reports for reasons other than it being false.

yeah bc instead of pleading guilty and copping some community service, he insisted on wasting the court’s time by going to trial

Didnt he originally pay a fine and do community service?

Yes, the charges were dropped but a special prosecutor was brought in a few months later who determined there was enough evidence to try him

Such overkill.

Compare this to Brianna Taylor or Ahmaud Arbery. It's just ridiculous.

To be fair, I think the og prosecutor was replaced because she was friends with his dad or something. But idk if they'd do that for someone white either 🤔

He wasted time and resources that could've gone to actually helping people. I'm not talking about cops necessarily, but it takes forever to get court cases over with because the judicial system is so back-logged. Shit like this doesn't help.

He definitely should've paid restitution but it should've gone to the taxpayers of Chicago. The cops have enough money.
