My Best Friend's Wedding director is dishing on the wrost table read he's ever seen which was between Julia Roberts and Russell Crowe for the 90s romcom. The director was pushing for Russell to get the part, but Julia had casting approval and no actor was getting cast as her love interested without her approval. During the audition, Russell gripped the script and read his lines monotone, without once making eye contact with Julia. The director claims Julia at one point got within inches of Russel's face trying to make eye contact. At the end, Rusell went up to the director and said "I think that went pretty well." The part went to Dermot Mulroney.
