And it was the first time where we got to see a positive depiction of a successful and happy black family unit on TV. Black people were simply not represented in this way at that time.
I was born and raised in Brooklyn so it was also super thrilling to see Brooklyn, the Midwood section to be exact, represented. At the time, that was a very nice mid-to-upper middle-class area.
It just simply cannot be understated the influence this show had and Cosby really was America's Dad for many of us who came from less happy and privileged backgrounds. Even as an adult, I would watch the early seasons sometimes whenever I needed a little "comfort entertainment" pick me up after a hard day.
I was completely crushed and horrified when the allegations started surfacing and I can no longer watch it now knowing what was happening behind the scenes. And I am so angry that all of the victims did not get the justice they deserved.
