ONTD Original: Celebs with Failed Clothing Lines

Jan 29, 2022 17:10

We know celebrities like to stay busy with side hustles. We have celebrities spreading their influence through a multitude of industries like food, beauty, alcohol and cannabis, publishing, and more. One of the most popular side hustles, however, is trying to get a clothing line going in the fashion industry.

A select few celebrities find great success in this field, like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Rihanna, and Jessica Simpson. There are many others who hoped their brand power would carry their aspiring designer dreams to the bank, only to to see their fashions end in failure.

This post brought to you by the FuMan Skeeto t-shirt I bought while on a NYC trip in middle school.

FuMan Skeeto by Chris Kirkpatrick of *NSYNC

FuMan Skeeto was founded in 1999. The collection was described as "urban-inspired women's streetwear with an Asian influence". The line got picked up by high-end retailers like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's, and Kirkpatrick even showcased it during New York Fashion Week in 2001. Despite these early successes, FuMan Skeeto fizzled out shortly after its launch.

Heidi Montag - Heidiwood

Despite having dropped out of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, The Hills star Heidi Montag, partnered with clothing retailer, Anchor Blue, for a junior apparel range of clothing in 2008. Even at low prices of $10 to $60 the range just wouldn’t sell, folding after only seven short months.

Beyoncé - House of Deréon

Beyoncé and her mother, Ms. Tina, paid tribute to Beyoncé's maternal grandmother with House of Deréon, a ready-to-wear fashion line that aimed to capture the "couture, kick and soul" of all three generations of women. Beyoncé modeled several House of Deréon looks onstage and in ad campaigns, even wearing a black and gold number to the 2009 Oscars. Unfortunately in 2012, the duo bid an unofficial farewell to the project all together.

Avril Lavigne - Abbey Dawn

This may be a controversial entry as Abbey Dawn still exists. Avril Lavigne founded her clothing line in 2008. The fashion line was named after the nickname that she had as a child, and is giving you Hot Topic- adjacent. Products used to consist of lots of pink, skulls, studs, and all things pop punk. After laying low for several years, the website now lists 5 all-black products (a hoodie, t-shirt, trucker hat, socks, and a face mask). The social media accounts haven't been active since fall 2021.

Fun fact, Kylie Jenner made her runway debut at the age of 15 with the Abbey Dawn Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Though Avril and Brody Jenner were exes, the two were still on good terms.

Lindsay Lohan - 6126

Lohan's clothing line, "6126" debuted in 2008. The name was inspired by Marilyn Monroe's June 1, 1926 birthday. Initially the line began only with leggings and later expanded to a full apparel collection. In 2011, 6126 came to an end, and two years later Lohan was sued for $5 million by the clothing manufacturer who alleged her ongoing legal troubles were the reason for the company's failure.

Dina Lohan - Shoe-Han

White Oprah announced the launch of her own budget shoe line in 2009, as well as becoming a national spokesmodel for the Long Island-based shoe company, "LoveMyShoes.com". Things quickly fell apart and the deal was cancelled before it got off the ground. Love My Shoes cited a sluggish economy, while Dina's reps reported that there was a miscommunication regarding finances.
