  • With Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness as the next big-screen release for Marvel Studios (4th May 2022), many speculations of potential cameos and appearances are spreading and evolving online, much like Covid herself - including variants of Tony Stark and Charles Xavier.
  • With a few months to go and reshoots officially completed, let's look at likely (and unlikely) cameos to expect...
Tom Cruise as a Tony Stark Variant

  • This one has picked up speed online over the last few weeks, with no official source, it seems to be a fan-built theory.
  • Cruise was reported to have been offered the role of Tony Stark back in 2008, before Robert Downey Jr, but turned it down, saying "as it was lining up, it just didn't feel to me like it was gonna work".
  • Tom's appearance in Multiverse of Madness would be likely fan service; a brief bizarre, but cool look at a variant of the sardonic leader of the Original Six - what could Tony Stark have become without his fellow Avengers? Without Pepper or Rhodey?
  • With Tom's busy film schedule it would be mission-impossible to get him on board for multiple films (not to mention Tony Stark has been represented adequately in over 10 MCU projects already - ENOUGH!).
  • MOM cameo? Awesome but Unlikely - 4/10
Professor Charles Xavier 1.0 - Patrick Stewart - 7/10

  • Will the MCU finally be introducing Mutants (X-Men)? With Evan Peters being brought in this time last year (even as Ralph Bohner) in WandaVision, there's no reason for Kevin Feige to be delaying the mutants introduction in the MCU any longer...Multiverse of Madness could be the best opportunity to introduce them finally.
  • Multiverse of Madness seems the only MCU project for the next few years, to be the perfect setting for mutants (Thor 4 and GOTG 3 will be otherwordly).
  • Professor X is the face of the mutants, father figure of the X-Men. Patrick Stewart has been synonymous with the role for over 20 years - and having seen [spoiler alert!] Tobey Maguire returning as play Peter Parker again in No Way Home, would it be so insane to see Patrick return?
  • After his violent but epic send-off in Logan (2017), it was reported Patrick declined returning as Prof X for any future projects....but then again can we believe anything these actors tell us when it comes to future projects in the MCU? (See: numerous interviews of Andrew Garfield vehemently denying involvement with No Way Home...)
  • MOM cameo? Never say never - 7/10
Daddy Charles Xavier 2.0 - James McAvoy - 9/10

  • All the reasons mentioned above, in favour of Prof X's involvement in Multiverse of Madness, can be applied for McAvoy's potential cameo too. I think it's somewhat more likely than Stewart.
  • With Evan Peters appearing in the MCU already, there's no reason why the face of the modern X-Men films wouldn't make an appearance here - coming face to face with Scarlet Witch herself.
  • Though unofficial, there have been leaks of a supposed Wanda vs Charles scene. In the comics, The House of M event saw Charles and Wanda come against each other multiple times, with Charles demanding Wanda return the world to normal. They have similar powers, so it would be incredible to see these two characters interact and it would not be completely unreasonable why their paths wouldn't cross - "Let there be mutants!"
  • What makes his cameo more likely than Patrick Stewart? He's younger (sorry), which could make future appearances in the MCU more likely. He's a well known name and has played him most recently in 2019's X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Not to mention McFassy was hugely popular back in the early 2010's - more fan service? - McAvoy's Prof X would be a likely contender against Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, who is growing more powerful by the MCU-minute. Their interaction could make an epic MCU moment.

  • I didn't want to say anything, but just like that, #SophieTurner appears red hair & #JamesMcavoy appears bald. will we have jean Gray & professor Xavier in #MultiverseOfMadness ?. #DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness #DoctorStrange2 #XMen #XMen97 #DoctorStrange #MarvelStudios pic.twitter.com/dwOGIbQGe2

  • MOM cameo? The most likely of all - 9/10
'Daddy Maximoff' Magneto 1.0 - Ian McKellen - 5/10

  • Marvel comic book fans will know why this cameo would logistically make most sense for Multiverse of Madness. Though not official in the MCU, the true identity of the Maximoff Twin's' father is Magneto himself. The Fox X-Men films confirmed this for Quicksilver, in Days of Future Past (2014), so why not have Wanda come across her fellow mutant anti-hero father Magneto, allowing them some much needed father-daughter bonding, to share their conflicted feelings. Both characters have balanced on the fence between hero and villainous paths - could their interaction send Wanda over the edge?
  • There has been no word from Ian McKellen himself, about playing Magneto again, so potentially this return could be more likely than Patrick Stewart.
  • MOM cameo? 50/50
Daddy Maximoff Magneto 2.0 - Michael Fassbender - 7/10

  • Without repeating myself, Fassbender's cameo in Multiverse of Madness would be as likely as McAvoy's.
  • What makes his chances of appearing, more likelythan McKellen's? Yes he has played Magneto more recently and has already come across one of his children in previous films. It would be more likely to see Magneto come across Wanda, as Fassbender.
  • It has been recently reported that Fassbender is in talks to join the MCU, but not as Magneto, rather a currently undisclosed role.
  • Would Kevin Feige take the risk to recast Fassbender in a new role, or bring him into the MCU as the already well established X-Men villain, Magneto?
  • MOM cameo? Dadadefinitely 7/10
Wolverine Variant - Hugh Jackman - 4/10

  • Despite dying in [spoiler alert] 2017's Logan, there's no reason to count out Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine. No Way Home showed that even deceased characters from other multiverses can be brought into the MCU, from points in time before their ultimate demise.
  • Insiders have claimed Hugh Jackman will be returning - but with any of these claims for MCU projects, they have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
  • With the notion that the mutants will be finally introduced into the MCU, how extensive will the re-casting be for the X-Men? Will a new actor play Wolverine, or will Multiverse of Madness be Jackman's final appearance as a Wolverine variant?
  • MOM cameo? Wishful thinking 4/10
Deadpool - Ryan Reynolds - 8/10

  • Whether you love him or hate him, Deadpool has been tied to the X-Men indirectly since 2018, in Deadpool 2 - with multiple Fox X-Men actors cameoing.
  • Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is a fan favourite and has proven to a be a success at the box-office for the R-Rated superhero sub-genre. His chaotic energy would be a rightful fit amongst multiverse chaos magic and Doctor Strange.
  • I also found a theory on reddit, which looks into the possibility of Deadpool "jumping around "cleaning" timelines" eventually leading him to Doctor Strange's path.
  • MOM cameo? Chaotic and On-Brand 8/10
Captain Carter - Hayley Atwell - 7/10

  • Several shots from the Multiverse of Madness teaser have coincided with the events of Doctor Strange's What If...? episode - in which Strange see's his reality falling apart, as well as the introduction of Evil Dr Strange and Defender Dr Strange. Therefore, it wouldn't be completely inconceivable for another What If...? character to cameo in the Multiverse of Madness.
  • The most likely being, Captain Carter. Could Dr Strange come across Captain Carter whilst jumping through the multiverses and request her help in some way?
  • Atwell has one of the longest runs in the MCU - longer than Chris Evans' Captain America himself now - her cameo could add to the madness of what the multiverses bring to Strange.
  • MOM cameo? Solid theory - 7/10
Reed Richards - Mr Fantastic - (John Krasinski?) - 5/10

  • What feels like a never-ending speculation, could 2022 finally confirm Jim H-John Krasinski as Reed Richards?
  • WandaVision cruelly teased his introduction after Monica Rambeau stated she knew “an aerospace engineer” who would be up for the challenge of working out a way inside Westview without being controlled by Wanda - but like many teasers & easter eggs in WandaVision, this amounted to something else.
  • The Illuminerdi via the Express has "confirmed" John Krasinski will be playing the Fantastic Four leader, Mr Fantastic - though of course nothing in the MCU is official until the final reveal in theatres.
  • Doctor Strange could very well come across polymath Reed Richards, heralded as the "smartest man on Earth", what better help could he ask for?
  • In the comics, The Illuminati are a secret superhero group that works behind the scenes. The original line-up included Doctor Strange, Mr Fantastic, Iron Man, Black Bolt the King of the Inhumans, Professor Charles Xavier and Namor the King of Atlantis - would it be so implausibl to have Doctor Strange interact with fellow Illuminati member Mr Fantastic?
  • While Krasinski could only be playing a variant of Richards, again, nothing has been confirmed for F4 other than Jon Watts (director of Spider-Man trilogy Homecoming, Far From Home & No Way Home) is directing and it will be released in 2024. No official casting announcements have been made.
  • MOM cameo? Seems very fan-created but highly likely - 50/50!
BLADE - Mahershala Ali - 6/10

  • Director Chloé Zhao recently confirmed Mahershala Ali's Eric Brooks/Blade, as the voice in the final post-credit scene of Eternals (2021). Speaking to Kit Harington's Dane Whitman, in the final post-credit scene in 2021's Eternals, he only says: "Sure, you're ready for that, Mr Whitman?"
  • Kevin Feige himself has said "We have, for years, wanted to find a new way into Blade...We love that character. We love that world. Now, with Doctor Strange and the supernatural elements coming into the MCU, it felt like we could definitely start exploring that..."
  • As the Multiverse of Madness has been confirmed as the MCU's first horror film, what better opportunity to tease the vampire hunter.
  • MOM cameo? As he was only introduced a few months ago, an appearance in MOM would feel too soon all things considered - 6/10.
LOKI & SYLVIE - Tom Hiddleston & Sophia Di Martino - 8/10

  • Loki Season One ended with the Multiverse being unleashed, after Sylvie successfully killed He Who Remains (Kang variant), creator of the TVA. Sylvie created chaos by killing He Who Remains and also forcing Loki into an alternative timeline, back with Mobius, where another variant of Kang is the known head and face of the TVA.
  • Without this chaos would the Multiverse of Madness be happening? Sylvie currently remains at the Citadel, at the End of Time, contemplating her life choices (as we all do at some point metaphorically). Could Doctor Strange cross paths with her to get some intel?
  • Chiwetel Ejiofour's confirmed appearance as Mordo in Multiverse of Madness trailer has him state “desecration of reality will not go unpunished.” He could very well be hunting individuals who have something to do with why the Multiverse is as broken as it is. Strange may be one step ahead of Mordo, seeking Sylvie and Loki (maybe even Mobius') help of how this all happened.
  • Hiddleston fans also discovered that stunt performers for Hiddleston, Wilson and DiMartino have been added to the castlist on IMDb.
  • After a bit of sleuthing myself also, in a group interview with Variety, Tom Hiddleston mentioned that he was on set and shooting on February 9th 2021 for his 40th birthday - Multiverse of Madness was still shooting in London at this time (Loki (Season 1) had already finished shooting by then and Season 2 has not started production yet).
  • MOM cameo? Given their involvement with unleashing the Multiverse, they seem the most likely three to appear besides Strange & Scarlet - 8/10.
