I think in one of his specials he transitioned from talking about his substance use into not wanting to have kids (or vice versa). Somehow I came away with the impression that from how intense and how young he was when he started drinking and doing drugs, he didn't think it'd be good for him to have kids or to have a kid who'd be at higher risk for having substance use issues.

lol i suspect he didn't want kids at all but oops Olivia got pregnant so he's stepping up to be a dad. but uh i do not think being a dad was in his life plans.

Imo, it was an oopsie baby and John’s hands were tied bc Olivia wanted to keep the baby. He would either have nothing to do with the child/Olivia and it would look really bad on his relatively clean image or he could take responsibility and stay with Olivia and raise the child and it would look less bad.
