December 11, 2021 Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed “West Side Story” had an underwhelming opening day gross with $4.1 million from 2,820 theaters on Friday at the box office. The film is looking at a disappointing domestic opening in the $10-11 million range. It just might barely beat Disney's Encanto. The film had a $100 million production budget.
For comparison, “In the Heights” opened with $11.5 million which flopped at the box office with $43 million grossed against a $50 million budget and debuted in theaters and HBO Max simultaneously.
The film stars Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler (in her feature film debut) with Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and Rita Moreno in supporting roles.
Will Wicked meet a similar fate?
