Exactly what I thought when I saw this. They're literally making a joke out of the actual suffering of slaves, thinking it's camp or whatever. This is so tone deaf. Imagine being so fixated with the rights of animals that you treating other humans like shit.

Also, what do they get out of antagonizing people/organizations with this disgusting move? As if that's going to make any real change. These people are just flattering their own egos with their aCtiVisM.

They aren't fixated on the rights of animals tho. They don't give a damn about animals. They're literally trolls who pocket money and run kill shelters.

They know what they're doing.

It really does feel that more than half the time I hear about this organization it's because they're being openly and hideously racist.

They're almost always racist or misogynistic. Very little in between

Outrage marketing must be the only tactic in their arsenal because they actively refuse to learn.

as a non-american, the comments in the ig post shocked me because I genuinely didn’t know this happened.

Any sick, sadistic thing you can imagine in your head was done to slaves in America at one point or another.

Yes, unfortunately and even ones I couldn't :(

I never thought about it but this summer I read about cannibalisms of slaves. :( Which makes me think of historical records/the prevailing thought that Black and Indigenous people were cannibals. Like were they, was this projection?

When I visited the African American History and Culture Smithsonian I read about slaves that were repeatedly bred and I never would have imagined that :(

In some cases, maybe.
If I recall in the Forward of People of the Silence or People of the Moon (decline of the Chaco Empire of the Southwest because of severe years-long drought that led a green area becoming desert) by Kathleen O'Neal Gear & W. Michael Gear that human bones from the time were found in the area with knife marks on them, which indicate cannibalism. But it's a very controversial subject.

Another “I can excuse racism, but I draw the line at animal cruelty” moment

This argument is a massive stretch. I’d get it if they were actually invoking some kind of slave imagery or referencing it but it seems like a one to one comparison between how disgusting human leather clothing would be and how disgusting the leather clothing that almost everyone seems to have is.

The whole point is that it’s awful that it’s as commonplace as it is to wear the skin of living beings. A lot of enslaved people were tortured but I still think it’s okay to compare the torturous treatment of animals to the torturous treatment of humans (unless again you’re actually invoking images of slavery to do so).

Except PETA has a whole history of racism so to give them the benefit of the doubt is the real stretch here.

Yeah PETA’s racist for sure but the argument just doesn’t make that much sense.
