This is so fucking stupid and such a waste of money and time.

"The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office initially dropped the charges against Smollett in March 2019. But in a highly unusual development, a retired judge filed a petition arguing that Smollett had received preferential treatment and seeking the appointment of a special prosecutor."

STAY RETIRED.

They should just hit him with a fine and community service and call it a fucking day. But they have a jury now? A whole jury? Calling in a jury in a pandemic for disorderly conduct? for fuck's sake man.

It really is a huge waste of money and the court's time. Lying about a hate crime is wrong but what really will be gained here?

it is a huge waste of money/resources at this point. i'm curious what deal(s) he has been offered to just settle the whole thing by pleading down to other charges or whatever.

they clearly want to make an example out of him so they're going all out. it's going to be a media circus.

Well, they're not going to discourage people from faking hate crimes because who ever does that? I have to believe the statistic on it is so small to be inconsequential and we only know about this because a celeb is involved. What it will do is keep actual victims of hate crimes from reporting or make sure there is an extra level of skepticism or disinterest in investigating the crime. This whole thing is just fucked at every point.

Imo, that's the point

im like SHOCKED disorderly conduct is anything more than a violation??? i was arrested for disorderly conduct - i plead not guilty and it eventually was dismissed, but even if i plead guilty, the punishment is a fine. there is no criminal record associated with it here
