Call Me By Your Name screenwriter James Ivory says that Shia read for the role with Timothée Chalamet for the screenwriter and director Luca Guadagnino and they were blown away. He mentions that Shia paid for his own flight to fly to New York to audition for them.
Ivory says the two young actors made a convincing hot couple.
Shia’s bad publicity ended up costing him the role and Armie Hammer was cast.
