That's so amazing

A lot of prisons, even starting years before the pandemic, stopped allowing in-person visits. In its place they installed video phone stations, similar to how you FaceTimed or zoomed with family during this pandemic but using proprietary software. These video phone calls were exorbitantly expensive and impossible for people serving time to use on a regular basis because it's hard enough to eat in prison. They don't give you enough food to meet your RDA for any nutrients, and then your only other option is to buy food from the vending machine or commissary which usually consists of junk food or what I've heard people call "struggle meals"

It's bad enough that they charge for it and have done so for years now, but to have taken away in person visits pre-pandemic years ago is cruel. And even then it is costly for friends and family to visit people in prison because they either send them to a prison far away in another state or it's in a location inaccessible to the majority of people in that state that requires you to get there by bus, train, or car -- none of which is cheap.

Here's more info on it. Note the article is from April 2019, not 2020, and I've been hearing about prisons phasing out in person visits since at least 2017.

I used to be more into the idea of prison reform or reforming the bail schedule, or getting rid of jails, but the whole carceral system needs to be burned to the ground
