I have some down time atm and thought it would be fun to make a horror movie post as I haven't in a long time.
Here are 5 horror movies you can stream (sorry if they're not available outside the US!) in honor of it being spooky month. Please note that the "free" platforms all have ads. As a reminder this is just my opinion, so if you watch these movies and don't like them, or disagree with my choices, then I am sorry :) Watch at your own risk!
INTRUDER
Where to Stream: Tubi, Pluto TV
Why I like this movie: It's a slasher that takes place in a grocery store as the overnight team are killed off one by one. Grocery stores already stress me out so the location is perfect for a horror movie. The story centers on Jennifer, who is being stalked by her violent ex-boyfriend. I thought Jennifer was a smart and fun character to root for. If you don't like gore though, stay away from this one, as the killings in the film are pretty gruesome and creative.
Note: There are way too many movies with "Intruder" in the name. This one is from 1989 and when you search for it, make sure to leave out "the" in the title! Also they put Bruce Campbell's name on the poster but he's barely in the film.
LUZ
Where to Stream: Tubi, Popcorn Flix
Why I like this movie: Luz was a student thesis film turned festival darling and it's easy to see why it did so well on the festival circuit. It's artful and a bit of a slow burn, and also with a 70 minute runtime pretty compact in the story. If you're a fan of old Italian horror you would probably dig the film's aesthetics and sound design. The story is about a young Chilean woman in Germany who works as a taxi driver and is being interviewed by the police about the death of one of her passengers. Luz goes under hypnosis to explain, but unfortunately for her, the man doing the hypnosis is possessed by a demon who has been trying to get Luz since she was a kid. I like that the movie is in multiple languages, was shot on 16mm and makes great use of its limited budget and minimal sets. If you like arthouse horror I would definitely recommend it. Also available through Shudder if you have access and don't want to deal with ads.
BANSHEE CHAPTER
Where to Stream: Tubi
Why I like this movie: It combines Lovecraftian horror with government conspiracy with the story involving Project MKUltra, mind-altering drugs and a woman in search of her missing friend who took the drug. It has elements of found footage using news reels, and also the camera techniques are found-footage style with handheld camerawork. This movie has a lot of jump scares, so if that's not for you, I'd probably pass. It's refreshing to watch a horror movie starring a strong female character and there's no nonsense storyline with a boyfriend, love interest, no sex assault, etc.
DIGGING UP THE MARROW
Where to Stream: Plex, Tubi, the Roku Channel
Why I like this movie: It's a love letter to horror fans. If you're not into found footage/mockumentaries, this may not be for you. But it has some awesome monsters and a great performance by Ray Wise, who claims to have found the entrance to a place called the Marrow, where monsters live. If you want to watch a horror that's not particularly scary (there are some spooky moments but it's not a lot to handle at all, especially compared to Banshee Chapter) and leans more on the comedy side, then this could be a good choice.
SWEET HOME
Where to Stream: Someone uploaded it on YouTube...
Why I like this movie: One of the most fun haunted house movies, and a huge influence on survival horror. The house itself is one of my favorites of haunted house movies. There was a video game made based on the film and that inspired the Resident Evil series. It is gory, but the effects are fun.
