It's the equivalent of March Madness for nerds--Nobel Prize week! Today the Swedish Nobel Committee announced that the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2021 has been jointly awarded to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian. They independently worked to find the molecular basis for sensing heat, cold and mechanical force. David Julius was affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco at the time of the award, and Ardem Patapoutian was affiliated with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Scripps Research, La Jolla, CA. This gives California an early edge in awards. In 2020 5 of the 11 winners were affiliated with California institutions (and none for the Ivy League).
