I like HBO max but it needs to be faster to flip through. Netflix blows everyone out of the water when it comes to scrolling

I haven't watched most like 98% of the movie release because I'm not interested in them. I wouldnt have seen them in theater either. One movie I watched in theaters and not on HBO. I hate the argument that same day is keeping people from going to the movies. I like the option and they should keep same day.

That's what i dont understand. Netflix has been around for a hot minute, how are these streaming services failing so badly at their user interface?

They're being OTT in trying to be different - like Hulu's mess of an interface was definitely their designers trying to be clever and ~elevated~, instead of admitting that Netflix has figured it out and just copying their patterns (No shame in that.)

I work in software development and decidedly NOT in UI, but I'm like... are there copywrites on UI?? Otherwise I can figure out why every service is trying to be ~~creative instead of functional

You actually can trademark a UX pattern (and some very specific UI). But it's rarely granted (has to be super unique) and even more rarely enforced - most designers recognize that 'new' patterns still come from existing ones, and those existing ones grew from other existing ideas, and those ideas evolved from other tried and true things... it's basically impossible to be original (not to mention the point of UX/UI is to design to the most common denominator, so people just 'know' how to use your app.)

But successful streaming patterns are limited (speaking from experience) so many designers overthink it, or try to design for the 'brand experience' over the user.

This was a perfect response that I couldn't have hoped for, TY!

I wish they just settled on being different enough. My last watched shows should be at the top, Disney+ doesn’t even have a section for that lol. Hulu has the worse UI or all the streaming services though. They should take Netflix’s UX and apply different UI. Just turn it green and that’s enough branding for me lol

Yeah, we designers are guilty of forgetting that the experience the user is looking for isn't the app - it's the content the app holds. So sometimes "turn it green" is TRULY the only thing you need to do.

And I genuinely am confused about what is up with Disney+'s apps. I used to work with some of the ux designers they've hired and they absolutely are better than what they're putting out. I can only assume it's an extremely corporate environment with a lot of VP "opinions" so everything dies before it's built haha

I absolutely can not stand Hulu’s UX. I wish I could reach out to the companies and get hired to fix their UX issues.

That's me. I wouldn't have paid to see any of these films in the cinema. Come to think of it (pre-pandemic), I was rarely going to the cinema to see films basically because most of them held no interest for me.

I've found tv shows (scripted) and non-theatrical release movies more interesting over the past couple of years.

At least on my TV the way Netflix scrolls is quick but I hate the previews of everything while I'm trying to look at other things in the same row so I actually like when I get to HBO or something and it's just quiet while I look at titles and posters and stuff.

What I don't like about HBO and Hulu is how hard it is sometimes to just go to the page for the show or the movie instead of just starting it, because I usually have to go back a few episodes if I fell asleep or just kind of zoned out and I hate being spoiled when it immediately goes to the newest episode.

There's an option to stop autoplay of previews on Netflix under settings.

I didn't even find it on purpose either. I accidentally clicked settings and there it was lol

One of the things that annoy me about streaming is that every one has a different system for skipping forward or back. Stop trying to be unique. Just pick a system that's practical and efficient and everybody go with that.
