The BBC knows the franchise is in trouble and I think Bad Wolf Studios was on the verge of failing, so this seems like a hail mary on all fronts but I'm for it.

I totally think that this is all on the BBC not being able to secure a new quality showrunner so they called up good old Rusty to save the day.

"Bad Wolf Studios was on the verge of failing" What? How so? They have a bunch of shows going so they seem to be fine from what I can tell.

Bad Wolf built a brand new studio in Wales a few years ago, filmed its two main dramas there, and then sold it to an American company last year (but maybe Doctor Who will rescue it back, idk).

Their two shows failed in different ways -- His Dark Materials hemorrhaged viewers from series 1 to 2 and never got great numbers in the US. A Discovery of Witches took forever to come back and, when it did, was completely creatively unsatisfying. From what I understand it did *okay* numbers-wise, but Bad Wolf had put so much of its time and attention into HDM that ADoW suffered in terms of promotion and creative attention.

Both shows were meant to have a five-series run and got cut down to three prior to Covid.

tl;dr -- they don't seem to be very good at building and promoting original content and I think they need Doctor Who to save them as a company with both HDM and ADoW ending.
