Iconic filmmaker, actor, and author Melvin Van Peebles has died. He was 89.

Van Peebles died Tuesday night at his home in Manhattan, surrounded by his family. Van Peebles helped pioneer Black films in the 1970s films including Watermelon Man and Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.
