September 21, 2021 In a candid and heartfelt op-ed published in the Washington Post, Uma Thurman reveals she had to get an abortion done in her late-teens when she "was accidentally impregnated by a much older man". Uma was motivated to share her story in light of the draconian and extremely restrictive (OP note: yes, I am editorializing because this law is vile) Texas anti-abortion law, which bans all abortions after 6 weeks, and the Supreme Court's subsequent lack of action against it.
On the Texas law, Uma writes: "This law is yet another discriminatory tool against those who are economically disadvantaged, and often, indeed, against their partners. Women and children of wealthy families retain all the choices in the world, and face little risk." She rightfully laments that this law is "creating new vigilantes who will prey on these disadvantaged women, denying them the choice not to have children they are not equipped to care for, or extinguishing their hopes for the future family they might choose."
