As our culture collectively revisits the misogynistic treatment of the Britneys, Parises, and Megans of the 2000s, we have to ask: WHY was this era so deeply toxic for women? A key answer to this question is a thing called "Postfeminism": the belief that misogyny and sexism are over, and therefore “feminism” is no longer necessary ( Read more... )

I watched Bridget Jones for the first time this year and couldn't even finish it because of how gross and sexist a lot of the characters were. Some movies just age horribly.
Caveat: I know it's a lot of peoples faves and not judging for that! I think never having watched it when it came out removed a lot of the nostalgic joy of it for me.

I loved Bridget Jones as a teen and then rewatching it when I hit 30 was pretty upsetting, the weight stuff and spinster message is so awful

Totally! The weight stuff seemed so cruel! I'm glad those kind of jokes are somewhat dwindling in popular media (somewhat as it is very much still around).

i don't think the video mentions this (i watched it the other day) but this was also around the time that shows like family guy and south park were making openly racist jokes and claiming it wasn't racist if you do it ironically

the early 00's were for the most part a pretty horrible time in pop culture

edit: i also remember a lot of overt homophobia, transphobia, & ableism from this time period. though i'm not sure if those were necessarily a backlash like the racist & sexist humor was. they could be, since the gay rights movement started in the late 60s and the disability rights movement had resulted in the americans with disabilities act in 1990. but i feel like the general public wasn't super in tune to those developments and were probably just still thought jokes hostile to gay people, trans people, & people with disabilities were funny.

The ‘ironic’ jokes were right up to 2012. Some of the stuff from the late 00s early 10s is horrifying now.

I watched SO much South Park and Family Guy, too. I now wish that I hadn't. I think SP had its okay moments, mostly in the early seasons (maybe just the first?), and then it seemed to get worse as they went on. I think the writers' boldness grew in proportion to their popularity.

dukes of hazard was on tv today and among all the issues in that movie they had bloopers during the end credits and one of them was jessica simpson pausing mid line and the guy she's speaking to in the scene says, out loud, to a room full of people with cameras recording: "she gets distracted when she sees me look at her tits"
