Hands clean is such a bummer bop, it came on at my gym the other day and two women were saying that they used to love this song and haven’t heard it in years and I had to be like “yeah I think it’s about being groomed” really killed the mood lol

I remember Alanis talked about that a couple years ago! Like, some people listen to lyrics and see music as a conversation, and some people just pay attention to the vibe and see music as a way to escape or be entertained. And both are valid! The real problem were the people in the first category who got it and dismissed it :/

honestly if it weren't for ontd i probably would've been in their same position! i heard it when i was 11 and i had no clue (i guess i'm kinda glad about that tho)....and even now listening to the first verse and chorus it sounds like it could be a kinda disparaging/rude love song lmao, i get how people zoned out after that but it's just so obvious if you pay a bit of attention.

The song is sooooo gorgeous and cheery until you remember its subject…still one of my faves, I can’t deny it, but I never got why she paired that melody/production with those lyrics. I guess this article has finally explained.

yes. it's about the producer she was "dating" at the time - when she was like 14 and he was a grown man. that song is so catchy and bubbly sounding, but the meaning behind it is seriously dark and terrifying.

you oughta know is about dave coulier. she was also underage when "dating" him :(

"hands clean" is about a producer she was working with during her pop era in canada. the sociopath who would tell her to stay skinny, and keep their "relationship" a secret. straight up groomed her.

most fans believe its about Leslie Howe. he produced her pop records.

Oh man, I didn’t realize Alanis and Dave had such an age gap

she was born in 75, so i think she was 16-17 when they started dating. he would have been in his 30's :(

Yeah looking back the lyrics are horrifying. "No one knows except the both of us"

That’s exactly what I thought. And yeah, it’s a great song but very sad to think about the lyrics.
