I've heard people say the same thing when explaining why they don't wanna find out the baby's sex but in this case it's a funny choice of words.

my coworker once told me that and she ended up having twins... I assume they tell you you're having more than 1, even if you want a surprise?

That's something you'd want to be prepared for, lol. I've met few people who didn't wanna know the sex and they said the same thing about it being the biggest surprise in life (I mean, it's 50/50).
