China has banned some reality shows, in the latest attempt to reshape the country’s entertainment industry that authorities believe leads young Chinese people astray.

“Broadcast and TV institutions must not screen idol programs or variety and reality shows that feature the children of celebrities,” China’s regulator, the National Radio and Television Administration said.

The regulator also ordered broadcasters to resist “sissy” men, “vulgar influencers” and performers with “lapsed morals”. The new rules are to rectify problems of artists’ violation of law and morality in the “fans community”, and create an atmosphere of love for the country and art.

Idol shows are huge in China, introducing innovative formats from South Korea and Britain, successfully localized for the Chinese market.
