Benedict Cumberbatch Eyes Oscar Race as ‘Power of the Dog’ Gets Four-Minute Standing Ovation at Venice

September 2, 2021 Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog premiered to raves today at the Venice Film Festival, including a 4-minute standing ovation. The Oscar-nominated director by all accounts will be back in the Oscar race again this year with her first feature film since 2009.
The film -- an adaptation of Thomas Savage's novel -- is being called "exquisitely crafted" with multiple critics citing career-best performances from Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst.
With 11 reviews, the film has an 89 on Metacritic. Netflix will release the film theatrically on November 17 before its streaming debut on December 1.
