A lot of people with Jeopardy thought Jennings would get the job because Alex's wife gave him a note and a pair of Alex's cuff links when he auditioned. I don't know to what extent he ever spoke publicly about it. But Jennings also has some icky past tweets and would have the same problem.

Alex did give an interview and give a couple suggestions on who should be "considered," and Laura Coates was named along with NHL sportscaster Alex Faust (who people leave out even though it was the same interview).
