ONTD gets a shoutout in NYMag's new piece on Gawker

It's a self-deprecating pastime here to joke about the fact that we're hanging onto a dying celebrity gossip website. But by jove, people still notice us, baby! We're not done yet!

Over the past year, as the pandemic and DeuxMoi have injected new life into the celebrity gossip mill, thinkpieces have been written about the gossip industry and ONTD has gotten mentions in a few places. The NYTimes. Vice. And now NYMag.

Choire Sicha, co-founder of The Awl (RIP) and a former Gawker editor, just had a piece published in NYMag about the Gawker revamp. At one point, he compares the site with ONTD and says:

"Gawker always let itself be outpaced on its own innovations. Oh No They Didn’t, still roaring on LiveJournal, always did celebrity-gossip chat better."

The rest of the piece talks about the different iterations of Gawker that have existed and nu Gawker. If you're interested in the rest of the article, a few key points and quotes behind the cut.

Gawker is back. But is it Gawker? @Choire reports https://t.co/dVQzczRxeI

-Choire says that along with ONTD (Hey-O!), we have Twitter for Manhattan-centric media criticism (no one is afraid of Anna Wintour anymore, he says). We also have Substack for long-winded observations about The Culture. "That leaves a narrow slice of Gawker’s heritage to exploit: funny, riffy, sniffy metacommentary."

-Gawker's staff is all women, with the exception of "one lone (and extremely gay) man."

-"New Gawker is hiding any grander journalistic ambitions behind a wacky 'we’re just having fun on the internet!' persona."

ONTD, do you agree we're better than Gawker? Are we "still roaring"? And most importantly, do you think you could beat Nick Denton in a duel?
