Good for her. I don't blame her.. She just naturally aged out of that "ditzy girl next door" role she was usually cast in. She's smart to focus on other things.

She also says that since stopping she had time to start a family and focus all her energy on that which she acknowledges she probably wouldn’t have had time to do if she was still acting.

that's at the latter half of her career, at a time when you could still make the argument that she had aged out of the ditz roles and was seeing what else she could fit into

I wouldn't have said it was ditzy girl next door that she played a lot, it was lots of slightly different versions of the woman who's there to be the sex pot. Even in the more female targeted movies she did, they liked to cast her as the hot character against a supposedly plainer (but still played by a gorgeous actress) character - In Her Shoes, The Other Woman. etc

But that probably boils to the same - she was getting to an age where those roles fall away very quickly because Hollywood doesn't believe women stay fuckable long past the age of 30.

Yeah, I agree with that too. Hollywood is just ruthless with women. Like you say.. past 30 the roles start drying up. Especially if you're an actress like her that often found herself typecast in those particular roles.

My most recent memory of her is in The Counselor (2013) and that one scene of her character humping a car is forever burned into my memory. I feel like she could be great at playing villains/unlikable characters I wish we could've seen more of her in such roles.

I have to say she's one of my favorite actresses. Mid 90s and 00s she ruled the movies. The Mask, My Best Friend's Wedding, There's Something About Mary, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, The Sweetest Thing, Vanilla Sky, The Holiday... all movies I can watch again and again and never get tired of. I recently re-watched Head Above Water (1996) and I couldn't take my eyes off of her. She's just so captivating.
