Forever suspicious of Tom Hanks given that this is how he raised his son

People can turn into assholes all on their own. Just like how people can be raised by assholes and turn out great. At some point you gotta stop blaming mommy and daddy for your shortcomings, or if it really is their fault, do the work to be better. /end rant

Okay we’re just gonna ignore the biggest influences in your life until you turn 18 ok

Okay we're just gonna ignore Colin Hanks who is totally normal ok

If anyone is stupid enough to fuck you and you end up having kids, I hope they're the worst people in the world and everyone calls you a bad parent for it ;)

When you're young, sure absolutely. Once you have more options, freedom, other influences as an adult then your choices are your own and you're responsible for your actions. Plenty of us have been raised by shitty parents and we hold very different views from them as adults. It's not that uncommon. I mean look at people who leave the faith they grew up with as adults? Talk about ~influences~, more like indoctrination.

Obviously your family doesn't suffer from any disfunction, ok. 🙄

I've got a gramma that is practically a walking saint. Had 4 kids, one was a freeloading shithead until the day he died, another is a good man but has made some bad life choices, and the other 2 raised their kids well and are now enjoying retirement with grandchildren of their own.

You can only blame mommy and daddy so far. Just like mommy and daddy can only take so much credit for their kids' success.

i'm not claiming tom and rita are parents of the year but seriously?

my aunt and uncle have two kids.
one of them graduated high school with a 4.0, got a full ride scholarship to college, graduated with honors and a double major in three years while being a student athlete, accepted a great job offer right out of college, and is married to the guy she's been dating since they were 16.
their other kid barely graduated, has been in and out of jail for repeated "driving while barred" offenses, hasn't held a steady job since he turned 18, has been taken to court by his landlord (my uncle) multiple times for not paying rent, and got in trouble a few months ago for sending risque texts to a minor.

parents can have an impact, yes, but some people just are who they are regardless of their parents.

This!
I know people who had awful parents, like 'call child services' type of parents, who grew up to be the most well-adjusted, loving, considerate people, the total opposite of their parents.

And I know people who raised two kids in a wonderful home and the youngest turned out great while the oldest is just a disaster.

Nurture does a LOT, but sometimes nature and outside influencers are just stronger.

I don't think this is a good example, tbh. I imagine gender expectations play a significant role in this situation.

ok fine then i'll give another example, though I don't know these two as well:

a girl i went to school with dropped out our junior year, just had her sixth kid before the age of 30. she has been to rehab for meth multiple times and has lost custody of 4/6 of her kids, is known for spouting racist comments on the regular despite 5/6 of her kids being biracial, and is a flat earther. her twin sister was valedictorian of our high school graduating class, went to a Little Ivy school on scholarship, majoring in biomedical engineering, and is known in my city for being quite active in social movements.

the point is that good parents can produce idiot kids and horrible parents can produce awesome kids, and the same set of parents can certainly produce both. it's ridiculous to sit here and say that a 31-year-old dude is acting like this because of the way he was raised. at some point you have to hold them accountable for their own actions.

My mother is the kindest, sweetest, most motherly woman I've ever met and I'm an absolute cunt.

It happens.

Do you not have any siblings? My sister and I are completely normal, while our brother is an idiot MAGAt. We all have the same parents. The difference is he made shithead friends in high school that took him down this stupid path. It has nothing to do with my parents.
