I haven’t looked much into it, but he was around 19/20 when they first met right? Are there allegations or assumptions of grooming? On the one hand, I know people have reservations about age differences in relationships. That said they honestly seem to have a good relationship.They have a child together, seem to motivate and respect each other, and seem to sincerely love each other. They’ve almost been together for a decade now. Like, what is the problem there?

I don't think 40 year old men should pursue 19 year olds. I hope he's been treated well, but I don't think it was appropriate on DLB's part.

I mean, did they not pursue each other? Was there not a seemingly consensual understanding of whatever they wanted to make of their relationship? I think as a broad general point, yes older men or women solely pursuing younger partners or fetishizing that idea is problematic but when it’s two people meeting and clicking otherwise and carrying on with that I don’t see the problem. I myself am in a relationship of 12 years, with somebody older and never felt that there was a power play or advantage there. I guess, I just don’t understand when automatically it is assumed that there’s a creep factor in relationships with an age difference.

I’m 34. To clarify, and I hope everyone is understanding them this way, my statements apply to relationships between consenting adults only. I understand people having their reservations about relationships with age differences, but also find it weird for somebody to
immediately make assumptions and generalizations about all of them. As I said, I’m not too familiar with their courtship, if DLB ever hinted at like keeping count of whenever Tom turned 18 or something of that sort then by all means, yeah…gross. From my understanding though, they met at a dinner for Tom, and the night ending with Tom asking Dustin to exchange phone numbers and the rest is what it is.

This. I’m 22 and the idea of dating someone in their thirties even now makes me really uncomfortable. There’s such a difference in life experiences and brain development between 19 and 40.

Tom was a 19 year old man who had lost his father at a young age and wasn’t out as a gay man.

It was not appropriate at the time for a forty year old man to pursue him. And I’m almost positive that they hid and lied about their relationship for a good year or two

IIRC he got with Tom shortly after he came out and is seemingly his only relationship? They just got married super quick and even if they have made it work for them and all that NOW it was a LOT to have this 20 years older man with relationships and experience be with an marry someone who could barely drink. it very much gives me when straight men find/meet 20 something girls with 'old souls'

I also watched Tom’s YouTube a few times and DLB is really aggressively sexual with Tom in front of Tom’s mother and I am really bothered by it. Like you really have to make sexual jokes and advances when it’s just the three of you??? Like if you were at a party and his mom happened to be there like fine, but it was like the three of them having dinner after she babysat.

I did notice that DLB makes a lot of sex jokes in general. It's one thing if a couple just talks that way to be flirty with each other, but Tom doesn't usually reply or react. I like Tom's vlogs but I find a lot of their couple vids to be uncomfortable.
