The Princess Diaries is a great little family movie (I think it holds up so well!) and in my opinion Anne Hathway was perfectly cast ( Read more... )

Nah, Anne ate here and in A Devil Wears Prada. I can’t imagine anyone else.

Now, as someone who loved the books Julie Andrews was the wrong casting choice. Grandmere was just the rudest, most miserable person in the books lmao. Like a Lucille Bluth type of character.

Yeah, when I read the books as a teen after watching the movie I was shocked lol

I was about to be horrified at the prosect of Julie Andrews being a wrong casting choice but wow she does not fit that description at all. I guess once they got queen Julie they completely changed the direction of that character.

Yeah, I wish either they cast someone else or they had Julie play her as she was in the books, which would have been great to see her playing so against type lol

Yep, he just had testicular cancer and couldn’t have anymore kids. Mia even knew he was a diplomat cuz he was paying for her to go to that expensive private school. He was just lying about being a prince lmao.

i'm still mad over the changes.

i once saw someone say that yzma is the cartoon version of grandmere and was stunned by the accuracy.

Yeah, the movie severely diverts from the books. The only accurate casting in the movie is Anne, Caroline Goodall as her mom, Mandy Moore as the mean girl and Heather Matarazzo as Lilly. Everyone else is like...what.

Especially because Mandy could've totally pulled off Lana's growth in the book.

Disney definitely disney-fied Grandmere, I wish she was a bit more like she was in the books, but I can't imagine Julie Andrews playing that.

They also disney-fied her dad by killing him off too. They love a dead parent at Disney.

Julie Andrews playing a book-accurate Grandmere would be a delight to witness *sighs*

Tho I like that (iirc) Mia in the book also called out how the films made Grandmere nice lol

If I remember correctly, Meg Cabot was consulted when Julie Andrews first signed on because they were worried about it not working and Meg said something along the lines of, "Julie Andrews wants to be in a movie based on my book?! Fuck it, OF COURSE she can."

It's been years, but she used to tell this story at book tours.
