this is cute and fun! also i was thinking about buying roller skates this week and unfortunately 90% of the actually cute skates that come in my size (huge) are like 300 dollars. truly devastating

Did you check out Sure Grip Fame or Riedell 120?

Eta I see you're looking for cute, you could try riedell orbit or Moxi Beach Bunny / Panther. There's also Jackson Vista or Sure Grip Boardwalk for fun colors.

But yeah sorry unfortunately skates are just expensive if you want something that is safe.

none of these come in my size :( i wear a women's 11! (the last ones you mentioned seem to be unisex sizing and are theoretically available in my size, but sold out the first couple places i looked + i'm not wild about the appearance)

i found a couple in stock in my size that were cute the other day but they were literally $300+ and i can't make that big of an investment in something i haven't done since i was like...nine years old. and i also don't want to buy something fugly because i know i'll be unmotivated to use them haha. thank you for trying though!! ♥

Skate sizing is weird, they're all in men's sizes so if you wear a women's 11 (US) then a men's 10 theoretically should fit you, but of course check the measurements. I wear a 9 womens and all my skates are an 8, but some people go down two sizes. I have long toes and cannot do that. For the ones that are already cute, Riedell Orbits go to a men's 11, Beach Bunnies and Panthers go to a men's 10. Sure Grip Fame and Riedell 120 both go to a men's 14, and you can always get white and paint them with Angelus leather paint. But black is always a classic and you can buy fun wheels and laces to add pizzazz if you're worried about them being fugly. Always check the size charts!

and don't buy impalas, they are toy skates that fall apart and can hurt you.

sorry to respond like 84 years later but i fell into a DEEP WELL of roller skate googling, lmao. you suggested moxi beach bunnies, does that mean moxi overall is a good brand? like would rainbow riders (a significant-to-me discount/seemingly a more ~intro-level skate) be okay, or would it be critical to save up and invest the extra $60 in beach bunnies? + i know about basic stuff like knee/wrist pads, and i already have a bike helmet that i assume would be okay, and things like that for safety, but what about tools? i keep seeing various wrenches/"skate tools" and i'm not sure what's required.

also, sorry to pepper you with questions, i just honestly do not understand how people research new hobbies like this and find reliable/trustworthy information that is also easily digestible. really what it comes down to is that i would like to invest the least amount of money (as i am A Poor™) while still having cute skates, everything required for taking care of the skates i buy, and, you know, maintaining the safety of my general

So Moxi is a division of Riedell - they have been making skate boots for decades, my mom's skates from the 70s are Riedell and they are still really beautiful and in good shape. The criticism is that Moxi in general is overpriced for what you get, especially when you get into the more expensive lines. I have a pair of Panthers (which are Beach Bunnies with a leather exterior rather than the synthetic) and they are quite stiff and have a lot of ankle support. They also have a wide wheel base which is good for stability. They're also durable enough to use for park skating should that be something you eventually want to try ( ... )

don't apologize for it being long, this is super helpful information! thank you so much! i was trying to find articles about good starter skates and kept just finding like weird sponsored listicles OR reviews from super experienced skaters that were writing for an audience that was also experienced, so everything was either unhelpful or confusing to me, haha

i would have just tried to find a skate store, but the only thing near me doesn't do roller skates, and i'm scared to travel too far because i'm frightened of delta and live in an area where like...everybody is anti-vax and/or anti-mask lol. so this gives me some idea of where to begin. i think i will probably just wait a couple months and try to go for the beach bunnies, as it sounds like they'd be less restrictive in terms of environment, and i have hilariously weak ankles and could probably use the support. and thank you for the youtuber rec, i think it'll help a lot.

ty so much again for helping a random stranger investigate a new hobby lmaoooo you're amazing ♥♥♥

Hello. I see you got some good advice from others and I am here to break some stuff down.

1.You need to know these measurments to get the right skate. Are you doing outside or inside skating. Smaller numbers go with outdoor skating it seems.

2.With name brands, Impala is the one that has a monthly payment plan. $25 a month.

3. Here are videos in order that One. Tell you the parts of the skate and what they do, how to adjust the skate, etc

The 12:30 mark is really good here

A good article about the time frame of cleaning
