Jul 27, 2021 10:32

Hello out there to all you KC stans! It's time to celebrate yet another 'Kellyoke' decade with none other than the timelessly talented Kelly Clarkson. So pop on a ring pop, put on your puka shells, and dust of those JNCO's, because this week we're skating through the 90's! Let's go.

"Hold On" - Wilson Phillips (1990)

"Hold On" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a full week and was the most successful single of 1990. Chynna Phillips wrote the song's lyrics while battling substance abuse and being in a "really bad" relationship. She explains to Kelly Clarkson, "I just said if I don't change my course, I'm going to be in a lot of trouble." Wow! Who better than to cover the biggest white girl anthem of all time?

"Weak" - SWV (1992)

Kelly's making me extremely weak with this perfectly pitched cover! "Weak" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks, ending the two-month-long reign of Janet Jackson's "That's the Way Love Goes". It sold over one million copies in the US and was certified platinum. Billboard named the song number 72 on their list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time.

"What's up?" - 4 Non Blondes (1993)

I used to perform to this song with my besties during gym class instead of working out. I'm gay. Who knew? The "What's up?" title was chosen to avoid confusion with Marvin Gaye's song "What's Going On". Song writer Linda Perry (queen!) heavily disliked the song's initial production and re-recorded the final version in just one day. It reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and and peaked at No. 1 in multiple countries around the world.

"Run To You" - Whitney Houston (1993)

Originally intended to be a break-up song, the director of The Bodyguard (Mick Jackson) liked the song so much that he'd rather have it be a love song, so the entire song was rewritten, except for the title. The song cracked the top 10 on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart, peaking at number 10. Kelly really nailed this one! I wonder what it's like being her bodyguard.

"Diggin' on You" - TLC (1994)

Really diggin this cover from KC! Another album I was obsessed with in the fourth grade, and even took the CD booklet to recess. My teachers probably thought I had no parents. The song peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 where it remained for 20 weeks. It was written and produced by Babyface, and contains a "jeep beat" with lyrics portraying a "streetwise vibe". Wow, the inventors of vibes? We stan!

"Give Me One Reason" - Tracy Chapman (1995)

Chapman's biggest US hit to date, the song reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. She first performed "Give Me One Reason" during her 1988 tour, seven years before its release. Chapman earned the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song, and was also nominated for three others - Record OTY, Song OTY, and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Whew! Kelly's definitely giving me plenty of reasons to stay here with this cover.

"Love Fool" - The Cardigans (1996)

For some reason this song always reminds me of Legos. Where's the petition to get Kelly her own Lego set?? Written by lead singer Nina Persson while she was waiting for a flight at the airport, "Lovefool" peaked at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, No. 3 in Canada, and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay Chart. The song was featured in the film Romeo + Juliet just two months after the release of the single, as well as in the 1999 film Cruel Intentions.

"Criminal" - Fiona Apple (1997)

A song about "feeling bad for getting something so easily by using your sexuality", it peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 (her only entry to date, indie queen!), as well as No. 4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. The song won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and was nominated for Best Rock Song. Kelly's cover is so good it's almost criminal!

"Torn" - Natalie Imbruglia (1997)

"Torn" was first recorded in 1993 by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, but Natalie covered the song for her debut album making it a smash hit where it peaked at No. 1 on the singles charts of Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Spain, Sweden, and the US. The physical single has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide. Wow! A cover within a cover. Kelly's talent truly knows no bounds.

"What a Girl Wants" - Christina Aguilera (1999)

Miss Independent covering Xtina?? This is too much! WAGW was not chosen by Aguilera, but her record label. She had little control over her career at the time and her music was chosen under the basis that she would become the next "teen idol" phenomenon. Christina states, "...some people do want me to stay in the pop scene, but I want to grow from there. I always want to continue growing and getting to that level of, 'Oh, she's a real singer, a real ballad-singer, she can do it'." Kelly is always here to give girls what they want with full support!

Well, there you have it! A journey through the sour, yet sweet, 1990's with the fabulous Kelly Clarkson. What do you think of these covers, ONTD? Would you trade Pokemon cards with Kelly? Stay tuned for next week as we celebrate Y2K with the one and only KC. (Y2KC? Coined it!) Bye!
