Was this the last good teen/high school comedy movie? I can't recall anything I actually enjoyed watching since Easy A - and even then there was a drought before with Mean Girls and She's the man coming out in 2005/2006.
i feel like they don't really make teen movies specifically aimed at teens anymore, even the few teen movies that come out are rated r and/or intended for adults (ie booksmart, plan b, good boys)
taste. i saw that movie in theater like 5 times. "my favorite's gouda!" is a line that constantly treadmills through my mind. one of my favorite romcoms ever 💖
its hard to enjoy the movie once i found out that amanda was dealing with depression and body dysmorphia when she was playing the twin brother. its sad bc the movie was really good. i wish she was able to enjoy the movie like everyone did.
[Spoiler (click to open)] “When the movie came out and I saw it,” she says, “I went into a deep depression for 4-6 months because I didn’t like how I looked when I was a boy.” She paused. “I’ve never told anyone that.” Seeing herself with short hair and sideburns was “a super strange and out-of-body experience. It just really put me into a funk.”
I liked Edge of Seventeen a lot, but I don't know if it really had mass appeal like other teen girl comedies - you really had to have been a teen girl at some point yourself to get that one, imo
and at a certain point, i did ask myself "is this a comedy, or a straight up DRAMA?!" it's part of the trend i've been seeing lately of teen content that deals with grief (never have i ever, bumblebee, to all the boys i've loved before, etc.).
Idk, I know a lot of guys who love that movie. Even the straight white film bros on YouTube were raving about it and saying the protagonist was relatable to them. I think if you’ve ever felt complete self-loathing then you get it

It's not the best film ever made, but it's a fun movie for the summer.
