You know, when I was in high school, Britney seemed so much older than me (I wasn't really into her music then, but now I'll bop hard bc nostalgia), but in reality she's only 2 years older than me.
Same with the Olsen twins . . . when I was younger, I thought they were so much younger, but they're only 2 years younger.
For some reason I tend to measure my personal life in lengths of four years because that’s the length of high school, and I always just think how each high school year felt so long and full and now as an adult the years skip by like nothing
the descriptions about her body and "jailbait" ugh I was too young to realise, but the 90s/2000s seemed especially heinous as far as media coverage for young female artists and actresses
I remember the way they talked about Britney and Christina and thinking this shit is gross but at my age not really understanding fully why. And the way they went after every female actor or performer on their weight and their sex life was really damaging.
yeah it's really crazy looking back. I am 26 now, so I was just a little kid when her and Christina first debuted but in the early-mid 2000s was when I became a lot more aware of the media around me. I remember when a lot of celebrities were getting really thin, and the way it was covered was either "nbd, wouldn't we all want to be this skinny?" or just completely making a spectacle of it (I remember with Nicole Richie in particular, it was like well damn if she is struggling with body issues, these constant headlines can't be helping) it was so normalized at the time though and I was a preteen, so it didn't dawn on me how crazy that was.
I saw a TikTok video recently of this woman who talks about celebs we were told were fat when we were younger when in actuality they weren't fat at all and I remember specifically Nicole Richie during the first run of the simple life being called "fat" compared to Paris constantly. Then she lost a ton of weight and it was like she still couldn't win.
"Britney Spears extends a honeyed thigh across the length of the sofa, keeping one foot on the floor as she does so... The BABY PHAT logo of Spears’ pink T-shirt is distended by her ample chest and her silky white shorts cling snugly to her hips."

Jesus christ. The fact that this was said about a child and is STILL happening now. Me and my friends send each other ridiculous JustJared and Daily Mail captions about women flaunting their toned stomachs and asses when it's literally just JLo at a school function with her kids wearing jeans and KStew wearing a crop top coming out of a salon. It's like women can't have bodies without it being for male consumption.
It's insane lol Like a woman wearing jeans or a crop top or having legs for that matter at the beach that are exposed is not anything remotely tantilizing~
