FWIW, he sings a single line while coming up for air. No Sparks songs are sung directly into Marion Cotillard’s p-valley https://t.co/rsczmKENVv

the scattered reviews are cracking me up, i love when oscar-baity movies fall apart

I don't think this is Oscar baity at all, tbh. It's a passion project from Sparks that only got off the ground bc of Carax + Driver getting involved, and Carax didn't get any Academy love for Holy Motors even though it got a lot of critical acclaim.

Yeah, Carax is the opposite of Oscar bait. His movies are deliberately unconventional and idiosyncratic; he's closer to being Critic Top Ten List bait.

I just commented to the poster above, the original release of reviews were mixed, but as more come out, they really aren't. The reactions lean towards - dang this is weird, good to WOW, with a few meh. The positive reviews are extremely positive and the could-have-been better still find things to praise, while the (again) few negative ones aren’t ripping it apart. It sits at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.

With that said, I agree that it's not really Oscar Bait beyond Driver and Cotillard. Although based on reviews, if it gets any noms, Marion's role is underwritten and she doesn't do much with it. Driver and Simon Helberg (yup, Howard from The Big Bang Theory) have the best chances, especially Driver who is getting outstanding reviews.

So is this movie a flop that regular people will think is dumb and weird and ~cinephiles~ will call a masterpiece? I just want Adam driver to fail so much.

It apparently got a standing ovation and everyone is praising Adam Driver's performance. I think the academy generally likes him, he might get a nomination idk.

To be fair, a lot of films at Cannes get standing o's. This one did apparently last longer than usual. So, I dunno. Adam has gotten outstanding reviews for the film. But then, sigh, he always does.

Adam Driver is getting outstanding reviews for the film, per the norm. Comments comparing him to Deniro from the 70s and Daniel Day-Lewis, a role like this shows why filmmakers love working with him so much, one of the greatest actors of his generation, etc. So, sorry, no failure coming.

The post we had about this made it sound odd to begin with. That fact that it's a musical takes it to another level of weird.
